We know language development does not happen overnight. This is the same for people who use AAC, they do not develop communication competency immediately. To develop language skills, all learners must be exposed repeatedly to modeling within a language-rich environment. Parents, caregivers, educators, and clinicians are often familiar with modeling oral speech but feel less confident when it comes to modeling on an AAC system. This course will introduce participants to the importance and benefits of modeling for people who use AAC. We will provide strategies for successful language modeling on an AAC system and techniques you can implement immediately to support a variety of communicators.
Learning Outcomes:
-Discuss three benefits of modeling.
-Identify two components of successful modeling for any individual.
-Develop two practical modeling strategies you can implement right away.
